The Voice Squad’s (Phil Callery, Fran McPhail and Gerry Cullen) style of singing in harmony does not form part of the Irish singing tradition but each singer had already served their time in our individual tradition before coming together to sing in harmony. They have carried with them this individual approach to the song and it is this that gives the group its unique sound.

It is the union of the distinct tenor voices of Fran and Phil plus the bass of Gerry, along with their own particular arrangements of good songs, that has made them one of the most distinctive unaccompanied singing groups of recent times.

While in recent years live performances by the group have been rare, in 2012 the group reformed for a concert on St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin’s National Concert Hall, and they continue their reunion with a special appearance at this year’s Féile Oriel.

May 5th 2012

LATE NIGHT GIG
(Club na Féile, Westenra Hotel) – Doors open @ 2300 hrs.
Admission – €15.00

Four Men And A Dog are true legends of Irish music. Their fiery tune sets are second to none for passion & precision, while the songs are full of surprise – anything from traditional ballads to American folk songs to acoustic rock n’ roll (in the words of the band “Blame it on the radio”).

Each musician is recognised as one of the foremost on his instrument anywhere in traditional music – most notably banjo wizard Gerry O’Connor and fiddler Cathal Hayden. Frontman Gino Lupari on vocals and bodhran is one of Irish music’s great characters, a true performer who engages and draws audiences into the show wherever the band play worldwide.

Four Men And A Dog only play a very selective number of dates each year and seldom tour in England, so this is a genuinely rare chance to catch one of Irish music’s greatest live acts.

We are delighted to announce that The West Ocean String Quartet featuring Seamus McGuire and Niamh Crowley on violins, Ken Rice on viola and Neil Martin on cello will perform at Féile Oriel 2012.

Formed in 1999 with the intention of exploring and celebrating music both traditional and newly-composed, the West Ocean String Quartet’s repertoire is eclectic and unique gaining them a reputation for breaking down the walls between traditional and classical music. The quartet has performed to critical acclaim throughout Ireland, including sell-out performances in Dublin’s National Concert Hall and Belfast’s Waterfront Hall. They have also performed in USA and in France, and continue to collaborate both on stage and in the studio with many leading musicians.
