Born in 1941, near Lisnaskea, Dinnie Leonard grew up on a farm in the townland of Knocks. Various attempts to learn music locally, attending ceilís and dance, started a life-long interest in music for the young Dinnie.

He started learning music from John James McDermott, an accordion player from Garrison.

Dinnie became a member of St Mary’s Céilí band, then later, St Joseph’s CB.

Dinnie’s teaching career began in Fivemiletown. As the years progressed and with many successful and enthusiastic students passing through his hands, Dinnie’s reputation as a great, inspirational teacher expanded into the neighbouring towns and parishes.

Dinnie’s legacy for his numerous successes with Céilí bands and Grúpaí cheoil at annual fleadhanna is impressive and hugely acclaimed over the past four decades.

He is recognised as one of the great stalwarts of of trad fiddling and a mentor for many young aspiring musicians.

We are delighted to celebrate Dinnie’s contribution to the preservation and growth of Irish trad music across Ulster. His legacy will endure for generations to come.
